eHealth (sometimes spelled e-health) is a relatively new form of healthcare that relies on electronic processes and communication. It has been about since at least 1999. The word is used in a variety of ways since it encompasses not only "Internet medicine" as it was defined at the time, but also "almost anything related to computers and medicine." In 2005, a survey learned 51 different definitions. Some believe that it is interchangeable with health informatics in terms of a wide meaning that encompasses all electronic/digital processes in health, while others use it in the narrower sense of Internet-based healthcare.
The word can refer to a variety of services or systems at the intersection of medicine/healthcare and information technology, such as:
- Electronic health record: allows for the exchange of patient data among healthcare practitioners;
- Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) is a method of requesting diagnostic tests and treatments and obtaining the results electronically.
- ePrescribing entails having access to prescribing alternatives, printing prescriptions for patients, and, in some cases, sending prescriptions electronically from doctors to pharmacists.
- Clinical decision support system: provides healthcare practitioners with electronic information concerning protocols and standards to use in diagnosing and treating patients.
- Telerehabilitation is the use of telecommunications to provide rehabilitation services over long distances.
- Telesurgery involves the use of robots and wireless transmission to carry out surgery .
