Pediatric Endocrinology

A pediatric endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating children with endocrine disorders such as diabetes and failure to thrive. Glands in the endocrine system produce hormones, chemicals that regulate many important bodily functions. Her most common condition is type 1 diabetes, which usually accounts for at least 50% of typical clinical practice. Failure to thrive is the second most common problem, especially those susceptible to growth hormone therapy. A pediatric endocrinologist is typically the attending physician involved in the care of infants and children with intersex disorders. This specialty also addresses hypoglycemia and other forms of childhood hyperglycemia, pubertal changes, and other adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary problems. Many pediatric endocrinologists have interests and expertise in bone metabolism, lipid metabolism, adolescent gynecology, or inborn errors of metabolism.
